JUNIOR FUN REGATTA Saturday, 15th October, 2005

As part of the Southampton and Ryde Rowing Community Sports Coach Project the Ryde Club staged their first Junior Fun Regatta on Saturday, 15th October, based on their Appley Park Clubhouse and the Ryde Canoe Lake.

This was a team event aimed specifically at Juniors under fourteen with limited experience and was designed to give them their first experience of a competitive Regatta in a very safe environment and with a "fun" format. Individual and Team events took place indoors and outside, on land and on the water and included Team relays, Ergo Rowing Machine Races, boat rigging, ball recovery, a minimum strokes exercise and "blind" sculling. Teams from the host Club Ryde, and Southampton and Itchen Imperial Rowing Clubs competed and the event was supported by South West Trains and the Newport based wind turbine manufacturers Vestas along with Ryde Rowing Clubs main sponsors Wightlink, I.W. Ferries. Much of the organisation of the Regatta was undertaken by Ryde Rowing Clubs "older" Juniors as part of their Junior Rowing Leaders course.

The competition in all the events was very close as the individual team members battled through the events urged on by their team mates and Coaches and watched by an enthusiastic group of supporters which included parents and members of the public who were passing by and stopped to watch the frantic activity. The team relay was won by Ryde with Itchen 2nd and Southampton 3rd, in the ball recovery the order was reversed with Southampton coming out on top. Itchen and Ryde tied in the Minimum Strokes exercise with Southampton 3rd with Ryde coming out on top in the blind rowing with Itchen 2nd and Southampton 3rd. In the land events Ryde won the rigging exercise, with Southampton 2nd and Itchen 3rd and in the team Ergo competition Southampton won with Ryde 2nd and Itchen 3rd which gave the Ryde Club overall victory with 145 points, with Southampton 2nd with 110 points and Itchen 3rd with 105 points.

In the 500 metre individual Ergo the best time of the day 2 minutes 05 seconds was produced by Ryde?s Charlotte Brimstone, with Warren Blackstone from Southampton 2nd with a time of 2 minutes 09 second and Itchen?s Tyler Foad in 3rd with a time of 2 minutes, 12 seconds.

Rachael Redhead, the regions Amateur Rowing Association Coaching Development Officer presented the winning Ryde team, consisting of Charlotte Brimstone, Louise Glover, Josh Collyen, Adam Edwards, Ollie Gove, Bryony and Max Reeve with the new Trophy ? ?the Gibson Goblet? presented in memory of former Club member Murry Gibson by his family and all competitors received medals with their prize package.
